PERCEIVE
Work through the PERCEIVE card to carefully investigate your artwork.
CONSIDER
Read about your artwork and if your artwork has one, also read the EXPLORE
MORE
card to learn about the history behind the image. The character in this work
of art appears
to have something to say. Characters reveal who they are by what they say, how
they say it,
and also what they choose not say. What concerns this character? What are his
or her
emotions? Think about what words would be most natural for your character to
use.
Consider the style of speech that might be used. Practice by talking out loud.
What is most
important for the character to say to us before we walk away?
CREATE
Take on the role of the character in this artwork. What is your frame of mind? What are you thinking?
Write a short monologue (one person talking about their thoughts). Imagine you are the character speaking out to viewers sharing what is on your mind. Remember that for the monologue to be believable it needs to connect to details in the image and use selected words that help to convey the character's identity and frame of mind.
REFLECT
Read your monologue out loud to check how the character's voice sounds. Make
any changes you need -- add words or details, rearrange ideas -- to add believability to the voice you have created. Could someone figure out which image you looked at just by reading your monologue? What verbal clues do you give?
