Look carefully at the painting and describe to your group, in detail where this painting takes place. What town, time, season, or other details can you imagine?

  • CHARACTER
Tell your group what characters you see. What can you imagine about their pasts, their feelings, or their thoughts? How do other characters relate to each other?

  • MOOD
Tell your group about the mood or tone of this painting. What are the emotions you see reflected? What kind of music would make a good soundtrack?

  • PROBLEM OR ISSUE
Tell your group what you think is happening in this story. What went on just before the scene that is shown and what will happen next? What will change and why?

CREATE
Discuss the ideas that have been shared. Which make for the most interesting story? Working alone or with one other person from your group, adapt and write a complete story, based on the artwork and drawn from each of the four components that were shared. Add your own choices and select the details that make your story the most vivid and interesting.

REFLECT
Read your story to the group and discuss. Does the writing suggest the mood of the artwork? What words or phrases help express the mood? Are the characters believable? What can you add to make the story seem more realistic and vivid? What ideas did you borrow from the group discussion?
