PERCEIVE
Work through the PERCEIVE card to carefully investigate your artwork.

CONSIDER
Focus on a character you see in the artwork. Look more closely at that person. Notice their facial expression or body language, the clothing they are wearing, and any other details. Look for clues in the artwork that may help you understand who this person is and what their story might be.

List at least five questions you have about the image and the character in it.

Read about the work of art on the back of the image. Read the EXPLORE MORE card if available. See if some answers to your questions can be found in the background and historical information.

Artists carefully compose images with meaningful characters by choosing facial expressions, clothing details, particular body poses, or other details. Writers also use descriptive details to make their characters believable and real to readers. These choices can be very powerful. They can affect how we feel about or connect with the characters.

CREATE
Using your questions as a guide, the information you've read, and the details you have observed, write a description of the character you have chosen. Describe in detail his or her physical appearance, their location, what they are doing, and what you imagine they are thinking and feeling. Imagine and write details of their life, names, families, and histories based on what you see and have learned about the image.

REFLECT
Did you find answers for all of the questions raised by your image? What questions would you ask the artist? What questions would you ask the character if you could? Did added information raise new questions for you? If so, what are they?
